In Palm Beach County, most of the 55+ communities are in the cities of Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth, Wellington and West Palm Beach. 55+ communities are a close knit society for men and women who are 55 years of age or older with more physical and social activites to keep you on your toes. There are Physical and Social Activities that enhance your lifestyle and are designed for you to pursue interests which might include recreation, culture, art and to mix and build relationships with your peers. Whether you’re retired, semi retired or still working, this is a lifestyle that you can’t find anyplace else, except perhaps in a country club which is much more expensive.
Because it is an age restricted community, at least one member of the household must be 55 years of age old or older. Some communities utilize an 80/20 rule which allows up to 20% of the community to not meet the 55 age restriction. Each community sets it’s own standards to comply with this rule. No one under the age of 18 is allowed to live in most 55+ communities, children are allowed to visit for varying lengths of time.
Almost all Over 55 Communities offer amenities such as a clubhouse, swimming pool, spa, fitness center plus many activities such as arts and crafts, music, sports, cards plus many more. Several communities employ a full time social director. There are also clubs galore to suit any of interests you may have.
Most Over 55+ residents enjoy carefree living. No more lawn or landscaping to take care of. A sense of security is important also, most communities have either a manned or gated entrance and provide cable service.
With over 70 Active Adult Communities in Palm Beach County, Florida, there is a variety of home styles including Single Family Homes, Villas, Townhouses and Condos. Prices range from very affordable to very expensive. There is certainly one that’s right for you.
Consider the Pros and Cons when considering a change in living arrangements from a large home to a smaller community such as an Active Adult Community. There are association fees which cover the amenities, lawn maintenance, security and staff.
Size: Communities range in size from about 190 homes to over 1,200 homes. Some prefer small and others prefer larger. My personal feelings are that it’s easier to fit into a medium sized community than a very large one. Amenities vary and are in direct proportion to the size of the community

Amenties: It’s important that the community you select has the amenities that appeal to you. Some have amenities that others don’t such as A Café, A racquetball Court, Aerobics Studio, Multiple Pools, Bocci Ball to name a few. Check them out when shopping for a home.
People: As I stated earlier, each community has it’s own flavor. Some communities are more active, more friendly and more welcoming. When visiting a community, Engage some of the people in the communities so you may form your own opinion.
Reserve: How healthy is the reserve fund. If they run out of money, guess who has to pay the bills. The residents of course.
In summary, Active Adult Communities off a sense of security and the opportunity to live along side your peers. They offer a wide range of activities¸ amenities and clubs designed to keep its residents mentally and physically active and as busy as they wish.
